Kiln causes fire at Kennametal

Mar 15, 2025

GOSHEN — A kiln fire abrupted at Kennametal, 1201 Eisenhower Drive North, Tuesday morning. The Goshen Fire Department was dispatched at 10:51 a.m. and were on scene shortly after.

Capt. Phil Schrock, who is assistant chief of Administration, said that the cause of the fire was believed to have started in a kiln.

“When the guys went inside, basically what they found was that in a metal kiln, which was melting the molten iron, had what we believed, boiled over,” Schrock said. “So there was really minimal damage to the machine and some of the surroundings.”

Schrock said that the incident was a Class D fire, “Metal which you obviously don’t put water on, so that’s always a concern when we hear something from this business. The way we put these fires out is a class D metal fire extinguisher or a fire extinguisher used for metal fires.”

The department was able to control the fire in under 15 minutes after employees were evacuated. There were no injuries reported.

The last unit cleared the scene an hour later at 11:51 a.m. and it was believed that production continued.
